SEEDS is an acronym for Spirited Education and Enlightenment Develops Stars.
The SEEDS Youth Leadership Program is the manifestation of a seed planted while its founder Melody Fox conducted poetry workshops for the "Beyond the Block" after school program sponsored by NEBHDCO. / Center for Purpose in 2004. Public School students in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, New York were excited about being actively engaged and listened to. The medium of poetry was used to inspire dialog, insight critical thinking, and spark creativity. The enthusiasm and growth of the participants was a sure indication that continual programming was necessary for the often under-served community.
In 2007, after working with children for several years, SEEDS was created as a free program to give eager youth a chance to shine. To date, SEEDS Youth Leadership Program has published its own newspaper, SEEDS Journal; recorded its poetry; covered a red carpet event, and hosted and performed its annual talent show. The SEEDS talent show is an opportunity for participants to show what they've learned in not only oral expression, but management, delegation, and organization. The participants are responsible for the theme, hosting, and performing.
The first SEEDS talent show held on Friday June 13, 2008, culminated with a trip to the Poconos to reward the children for their hard work, commitment, creativity, and citizenship. In 2009, SEEDS performed their 2nd annual talent show / fundraiser in tribute to legendary radio griot, Imhotep Gary Byrd.
In 2011, SEEDS is still growing.
